An Interview with a Social Media Marketer

I was recently asked to do an interview with Bradshaw Consulting about social media marketing, and how small businesses can leverage social media for brand awareness.

What is the most frequent mistake you see small businesses make on social media?The biggest mistake I see from small businesses is using social media as a 1-sided sales funnel, promote promote promote, and they often use the same message across every platform. It`s important to understand that each platform has a different communication style. Where one platform like Twitter has real value in using hashtags, LinkedIn does not. For those who use Instagram, hashtagging almost every word is a must to see results. Carrying this strategy over to Facebook often annoys fans.

I find it really devalues a brand`s social message by using the same message across every platform, it really screams that they don’t know what they are doing. This also brings up an important point, don’t link your Facebook and Twitter accounts! Those that do see a lot less value in their social activities. To be honest it’s a pet peeve of mine lol. I shared a great example of why this is important last week on my fan page. I found a great promotional tweet that ended mid sentence, with a link to a website and not the rest of the promotional message.
