Samsung Receiving Viral Support on Social Media

For the second time in four months, the personalized PR actions of Samsung Canada have landed it on the heavily trafficked front page of Reddit, a socially enabled news sharing site that occasionally measures page views in the billions.

In reading various stories online, it seems the viral buzz began in May when Shane Bennett, based in Ontario, send a request for a free phone on the Samsung Facebook fan page accompanied with a drawing. Drew Bomhof, community manager at Samsung Canada, declined his request for a free phone, but instead complemented Bennett on his drawing, and sent back a drawing of a kangaroo.

Bomhof stated that the company’s social media pages often receive request for free products, but are usually dismissed.  Bomhof was impress with Bennett’s creativity and effort that accompanied his request for a free phone.

A few months after Bennett’s initial request, he received his free phone from Samsung, which even came customized with his dragon drawing on the case. Enclosed was a letter that read, “As a token of our appreciation for the positive media you helped us attain earlier this spring, we’d like to thank you with this very cool, one-of-a-kind Samsung Galaxy S III. This is the only customized S III in Canada, and we hope you enjoy it as much as we enjoyed watching the story of the Dragon and Kangaroo go viral.”
