Important Scam Alert: Octavius Shotwell

I recently posted a beautiful leather sofa set on Craigslist for sale as we are moving and have no room for them. A few hours after posting the couches on Craigslist I received an email response from a man named Bob Amy Ajlaji interested in purchasing the couches, and asking if they were still for sale. I responded to the email thread saying they were still for sale. A few hours later I received an email from Rose Mary, responding to my last email about them still being for sale. She told me that she was a flight attendant with Delta Airline, and although she would love to come down and look at the couches, her work hinges on her free time and she is unable to come down. However, she noted she was really happy with the condition of the couches and wanted to purchase them site un seen. Fine by me. She asked for my PayPal information to transfer the money, and told me I would not be responsible for any shipping or handling costs. I specified in my ad that the person purchasing these couches will have to provide their own transportation for the couches.

I received another email a few hours later from John Peters again reconfirming that the couches were sold to him (but I have never talked to him), and again I wouldn't have to worry about shipping or handling. I then received another email from Rose Mary saying that she was having a problem with the shipping company, she transferred the money to my PayPal account, with an extra $900, and asked if I could pay the shipping company in Chicago via Western Union. An hour later I again received an email from John Peters confirming that this was safe and ok to go ahead and pay the shipping company in Chicago, and advised me that I only had 24 hours to make the payment before the offer expired. Essentially this company asked me to send them $800 "for shipping costs" in order to have my PayPal money transfer sent to my bank account? That didn't sound right

When I logged into my email, I saw a very convincing email from what looked like service@paypal.com showing the $2,500 money transfer in my account, with a note saying the money will be held until I am able to provide proof that I have paid the shipping company. Funny thing though, when I logged into my PayPal account, I had a $0 balance. I then began to wonder about this whole process, things sounded a little sketchy from the beginning, but now things were really not adding up. I decided to google search the shipping company name that was provided to me and found the following responses:

  1. Do not send your money to that guy he is a scamer and he is in Nigeria but telling people he is in england you may see emails coming from this address: Service@PayPal <trackingpost_manager@consultant.com thats all fake, you should report it to the FBI
  2. THIS IS A SCAM! The same thing happened to me when I tried to sell my laptop on Craigslist
  3. Paypal will NEVER ask for tracking information or wait until an item is shipped before crediting the money
The company's name is Octavius Shotwell in Chicago. Interesting, when you google search the company name their is no company website, no information about the company in any online directories, and a ton of bad news about this company. Don't sent them any money!

    3. Hi guys,

I'm in Australia too - just had the same thing happen today. I'm selling a car and received the following text:
"Hi, I'd like to know the final price for your AD on GTREE as i would like to purchase. Do get back to me via: samuelolivia6@gmail.com Samuel." It was sent by WEBSMS so there is no tracking available unfortunately...
Best thing anyone can do is just ignore the sms's and emails...

Kim Schatschneider RAF. email address, fimile.joo@googlemail.com. I stupidly gave my email etc, but as yet no money has been 'transfered' as i just got an email to say information was with the shipping company. I replied to this email and told them item was sold this evening. Was thinking of letting them know that i knew it was a scam but did not want to invite any trouble. Has anyone had any nasty replies from this person??

  2. i have over 30 emails back and forth from him on the purchase of my car on craigslist he is in the united states that is for sure octavius shotwell is a real person to because he has to have a valid drivers licence to pick up the money from western union in chicago,il he came pretty close to getting me to fall for the scam he starting with $950 to the shipping company i told him that would never happen by the end of all of are emails he had said the shipping company would take $300 via western union and when they came for the pick up i would pay the rest of the $950 he is getting worried and he is trying to run this scam faster and faster i am making it my personal goal to take him down by the end of the week if anyone with more info on this matter please post and if anyone has any questions let me know he will go down if anyone would like to see some his emails post bac and i will post them on this site

    1. You do not need a valid drivers license for Western Union if the ammount is under $1,000. For those transactions there is a "secret question" you provide to the clerk for which the scammer replies with the "secret answer". No wonder the scammers numbers are always under 1K. You just didn't get that deep into the scam.

    2. Oh, and thanks for the thread. I got suspicious when the display name and email address were both real names, but different. I never replied to the first email so the scammer doesn't have my email address yet. Saved me a lot of hassel.

  3. he tried to pull the exact same scam on me except i am selling a car western union him $950 i said that would never happen so like 15 emails later he said i could send $300 via western union and when they came for the pick up i would pay the remaining fee of the $650 i said no way and then a day later he send me a email copying the service@paypal.com to make it look real and this is what i got

Thanks for your swift response to my buying inquiry, your asking price is quite reasonable and affordable considering others I've seen lately, I'll take it. I would have loved to come check it out my self but am currently in camp as military seer instructor for new recruits, I however squeezed out time to check this posting as all personal dealings are highly restricted here, that's why am arranging for a pick up. I'm buying this as retirement gift for my Brother in Law, as promised him early this year. I really want it to be a surprise to him so I won't let him know anything about it until it gets delivered to him, I'm sure he will be more than glad to receive it . I don't have access to my bank account online as I don't have internet banking.am going to arrange for a pickup am making arrangement on that with the shipping company so you got nothing to worry about,,

However, I'll like to complete this transaction through PayPal for the safety of both. in addition, I'll need your name, the pickup address or location and please include your paypal email address for the payment and send me some recent pictures if available..but if you don't have paypal account all you need do is to log on to WWW.PAYPAL.COM get an account attach it with your credit card or your bank account,is secured and very easy to set up.let me know once you done with the account,i think i can trust you on this..

  8. He tried to scam me 12 hours after posting my sons boat on Craig's List on 8/23/11. I hope the FBI or someone can catch him. Here's where the red flag went up for me.
He says"Hello I was just about to make the payment when i had this little problem with the picking up,I got an email from my agent..i taught i included that in my previous email.he said he won't come for the inspection and pick up the item unless i pay him the agent commission fee first in order to be able to schedule a pick up time ,and my pick up agent head quarters is in the United state and all commission payments made for pick up, from anywhere in the world is sent to their head quarters in the USA and the only form of payments they accept is western union money transfer and i tried to pay online but they referred me to an agent location to pay by cash because of some security reasons, and there is no post office(there is usually a western union section in most post offices) or any western union agent offshore! so i have to ask you to help me with the pick up fees, i will include the $900 USD they charged to pick it(due to the price and weight of item)up and take it my home(1st class treatment), to the payments i will send through paypal, after i have made the payments, i will need you to help me send the $900 USD to my pick up agent through western union money transfer, the western union money transfer can be made at a post office near to you, there is always a western union agent in most post offices or online at www.westernunion.com .I will be making the payments shortly and will email you as soon as it has been done.."

And I hate to say it, pretty F'in crafty...not a compliment. Ive never been subject to a scam attempt until now. I dont even know how to creat a Craigslist ad, my wife helped me! This guy was trying to take me for $1000.00 via Western Union and all. I just randomly googled the name Octavius Shotwell and found this site! Jesus, I can barely believe all this. 23. I almost got ripped off by Calton Rose, email address rosemaryblackw1@gmail.com. Said she was out of the country but Fast Cargo would pick up the furniture, just needed to send $945 through MoneyGram before the rest of the payment could be transferred through PayPal. We looked into it online, found this website, contacted PayPal who said "yes that's the scam" with trying to use the email address ®Service@PayPal.com looking like it was coming from PayPal. We sent all emails from this fake website to spoof@paypal.com.
We also sent this current website to Calton because they were wondering why they hadn't hear from me in awhile. So once she read this website, replied back with "SORRY IT'S JUST A MEANS OF LIVELYHOOD".
So that's why I work so hard all week Monday through Friday so you can sit in front of your computer collecting part of my paycheck and thousands of others each and every day??? People are disgusting...no wonder you can't trust anyone nowadays!

That she was out of town and would have someone else pick up the chair so she wanted my paypal address to send the money.

The myriad of typos and poor use of english told me it was a scam, so I emailed "her" back and said that I didn't have a paypal account (lies but whatever) and cash would be perfect.

    All "gmail" addresses.
All "out of the country" or "unavailable to meet".

"Alright, the payment will be made via PayPal for the safety of both.
so i will like to have your PayPal email address where the funds will
be sent. And also i'll need the address where it will be picked up
because am arranging for a pick with a local moving company. i'll be

  41. Wow, the name has already changed twice today! The second email is from tracyw.woodings@gmail.com . I had replied before looking up to see if it was a scam - when they mentioned paying via Paypal, I thought I should look it up. Freaking shady people trying to take advantage of other people's situations...

    Alright Mate,

I am very keen. How i wish i could come for viewing and inspection as am currently overseas at the moment and i want it picked up before i get back, though i will be back in couple of weeks. Due to my inability to make a bank deposit, I would be paying via PayPal which is safer for me. Kindly send me a paypal payment invoice or create an account at www.paypal.com.au if you dont have one. I will make a concrete pick up arrangement with my transport agent who will be coming over for pick up once you receive full payment into your PayPal account. Have a nice day. Few more photos will be appreciated as well and let me know the FINAL PRICE.

Posted furniture for sale on Craigslist and got a note from:

    lenardbright@gmail.com "Debbie Atteberry"

    why are you selling?
    what is condition

    - once I provided her with the answers I got this in response.

Alright, the payment will be made via PayPal for the safety of both. so i will like to have your PayPal email address where the funds will be sent. And also the address where it will be picked up because am arranging for a pick. I may not be able to come check it myself

  46. This has just happened to me too. Except now it is from 3 "different" people but they all are saying the same thing. The first was sent from the email of calton rose but it was signed by a jeromy. The next one responding to the email was sent from a Jeromyhilson@gmail.com saying,
Hello,I must say I'm quite okay with your reply,Likewise your asking price is reasonable I'm going to buy it $13,500.I would have love to come or call myself at least to see what am buying..please let me know if i can trust you.. I've just been discharged from the hospital due to a bomb blast injury I sustained in Kabul Afghanistan, in march and my Orthopedic Doctor advice that I should be on wheelchair for 2months. I will start making arrangement concerning the pickup at your place once I read back from you so you've got nothing to worry about am going to handle shipping. I will like to know if you have Paypal account where I can transfer the money and I need you to get back to me with the pickup address to know the shipping cost, send me more pictures if you have..to be sure that I don't waste my time with endless discussions. This way, I shall be assured of the serious intentions.

I would love to be to know more about the Present condition of the car and its Service History..I will be paying you through PayPal,which is a fast, safe and reliable method of payment.. ..And i will take care of all Transportation Preparations for the vehicle to my son..I really want it to be a surprise for son so i wont let him know anything about it until it gets delivered to him, i am sure he will be more than happy with it cos i'm buying the car for him as a surprise birthday gift. Will not be coming for the viewing of the car myself due to the nature of my job. and also i will like you to get back to me with your Phone number and you full home address coz once the money is transfer to your PayPal account my pick up agent will be coming to pick it up..

  53. Holy cow! Sooo glad I googled the name Debbie Atteberry. Same scam, same mo. I am selling bunk beds and received a response from rosemaryblackw1@gmail stating that she would pay via paypal for the safety of both, wouln't get a chance to see herself as she was out of the states and needed by the time she got back and that pick-up would be scheduled as soon as the money cleared my paypal account. Sounded a little suspicious to me - evidently, for good reason......

  54. Here's another one!! Response to my Craigslist ad posted Aug 8, 2012 for a Nissan truck. They sent 1 email asking if the truck is still available /used the name Cheryl Turner & email Chtner6110@gmail.com. When I responded, they wrote back w/details about how to use paypal, etc, but used the name Cheryl Turner & different email. This time the email was: Seaadventutes.sc003@gmail.com. (I'm in SC so I assume the SC in her email was intended as the state. Also I reported to Craigslist.

Basically says she wants to purchase for her father but is working out to sea & will use paypal & have shippers pick up the truck. Needs me to pay some shipping, etc.
I wrote back & said "Sure thing. LOL. Cheryl Turner is an Attny in SC & she llikely doesn't appreciate you using her name for Nigerian purchases".

This has been going on too long. It would seem that Craigslist would have been able to something by now.

  56. Just tried the scam on me today. Received the same email inquiry about an antique piece I am selling. What is the condition, etc? Then noticed that the name was Deborah Atteberry and the email was rosemaryblack@gmail.com. Sent several emails back and forth because it did not sound right. Googled the rosemaryblack reference and found numerous posts. Yes, I agree, Craiglist should do something. Also, the PayPal operators should have that email flagged. Customer Service did nothing but say there is no account with that information.

  58. If you are reading this, you probably put an email (found below) into google and it brought you here. All the email addresses are scammers trying to scam you out of your money. Never send money to these people, they are in Nigeria trying to (usually) do one of two two scams. First is they will request to purchase your item and tell you that they need to overpay you some amount of money and you need to forward the money to their "mover", "shipper", or "agent". They forward a very real looking Paypal email making it look like Paypal has received funds, but will keep the funds in a 'pending' status until you forward a money control # from western union to Paypal (which is them, mine came from - PayPal Service® but it won't show the entire address in your email browser...so it looks to be from Paypal.

If you get this type of scammer, you can exchange many emails with them and absolutely waste their time...keeping them from an honest American trying to do a legit sale. If you have time, do it yourself...it's a lot of fun.

The other type of scam is that they want to purchase your item by sending a check to you. It's a fake check for sure. These scammers aren't as easy to keep on the hook, so I just forward them the contact info for our local FBI (see below).

    Armando Fernandez
    5740 University Heights Blvd.
    San Antonio, TX 78249
    210-225-6741

Sorry FBI. You guys should be expecting A LOT of checks.

After you get through your initial shock and anger...find amusement. Let's advertise all these scammer's emails, let's all work together in screwing with their heads, their time and their pocketbooks. Seems I can't do much by myself, but together, we are legion. Together we can fight this insidious vermin and protect those that can't. Our legislators haven't done anything, our police departments don't act...so let's flood the FBI with fake checks! :)

After I found the world of scambaiting, I posted an exchange I had with a 'Vivian Williams' on a local site that baiters use to share stories, tips, pics, etc. It felt great to share my experience and my first attempt at baiting was a great success.

But, let me tell you what happened. I received this message almost immediately:

Hey dude, She recently contacted me. All I gave her was my PayPal Name which is my e-mail. Obviously she already had that. After I gave her that I got suspicious and googled her name to find your thread.

MY WORK (I SAY THIS WITH THUNDER IN MY VOICE) SAVED THIS POOR KID FROM MAKING A BIG, COSTLY MISTAKE. AND IT MADE IT ALL WORTH IT.

I am an aircraft mechanic by day and now a scambaiter by night. Soon these Nigerians will Shiver from my Timbers!!!!!(my idol).

Sorry inside joke. Anyway, find a list of the local emails of recent scammers that have been trying to scam me below.

Yep, I just got the email on Saturday from Air Commodore Kim Schatschneider wanting to purchase my living room suite. The most annoying aspect is that I then cancelled a visit from a genuine local purchaser, who has since bought something else. As soon as I got the second email about the Western Union stuff I immediately became suspicious and googled her name. So, thanks guys you've confirmed my suspicions and I've forwarded the comms to the local British Police.

  80. I got as far as telling her my paypal email (which I've now closed) address and full name. I then emailed her my telephone number to discuss it further after I'd gotten this:

We have received an order from one of our customer to make an instant payment of £205.00GBP to your PayPal account. The payment has been made successfully and the money has been credited to your PayPal account but you will not have access to it. However, since this money is meant for a purchase or a service that involve a Shipping Company. We have to receive a confirmation that you have sent the pick up cost to the Shipping Agent before the money will be available for spending. This is due to the large increase in the rate of the online scams recorded last year (2012). We have changed some of our rules and regulation to make sure our clients, are safe from scam, PayPal in conjunction with The FBI and The IFCC has invented certain preventive measure to ensure the safety of our customers.

I wanted clarification on what was going on. After googling her name I found this, but what can she do with all the info I gave her??
